Cupcake Day | Alzheimer’s Society

21.06.21

There’s nothing like cake to bring people together. Last Thursday (17/06) we celebrate Alzheimer's Society's Cupcake Day and helped raise vital funds to support people affected by dementia. Along with a generous donation from local company Cheesecake by Sarah, our team baked and bought cakes to be enjoyed on the day! With a voluntary contribution for each cake going towards the Alzheimer's Society. How Cupcake Day helps Living with dementia bring challenges at the best of times, but coronavirus has made daily life the much harder. The Alzheimer's Society lifeline support services are there for people affected by dementia during this crisis and continue to be as the coronavirus pandemic endures. Thanks to the efforts of brilliant fundraisers, thousands of people living with dementia and their families can rely on Alzheimer’s Society for support, care and guidance. Our fantastic team raised an incredible £80.00 on the day, all going towards this fantastic cause!

Emily’s Apprenticeship Journey

18.06.21

Emily is 19 and started her Level 3 Electrotechnical Apprenticeship at Clifford College in 2019, joining the Barlows team in High Wycombe. Emily is coming to the end of her apprenticeship and recently experience her first day in the field on her own. We caught up with Emily to find out how she has found the apprenticeship process and her time at Barlows so far. How do you feel as you approach the end of your apprenticeship? "As I near the end of my apprenticeship, I really feel like I have achieved something and I am proud to have accomplished so much already and to have reached this stage of my apprenticeship." How has Barlow's been able to support you during this transition? "The support from Barlows all the way through my apprenticeship has been amazing! They supply me with the knowledge I will need on site, to prepare me for the jobs and they support me throughout the day whilst I am on site." How has Clifford College supported you in gaining this qualification? "I am grateful as Clifford College have helped me gain all the knowledge and skills I need for exams they ensure I pass my apprenticeship and gain the qualification. Their attention to detail helps me when on site as I am confident in my ability." What advice do you have for anyone else coming out of their apprenticeship? "The best bit of advice I could give is to never worry about being on your own, Barlows continue to provide support when needed even after you have finished your apprenticeship. Never be afraid to ask for help." Would you recommend this apprenticeship to someone leaving school? "Yes, I would definitely recommend this apprenticeship because it gives you great opportunities to gain a qualification whilst working hands on."

Clifford College’s Apprentice of the Month (April)

05.05.21

A huge congratulations to Harvey Shorter who has won Clifford College's Apprentice of the Month for April. Harvey has won a £30 voucher that can be spent on tools! “Harvey is currently in his 2nd Year at Clifford College and ahead of his portfolio target, he constantly strives to better himself and the quality of his work, which has stood out over the last couple of months.” - Leigh Buckley, Clifford College Assessor We spoke to him after the award, here's what he had to say: “The apprenticeship scheme was perfect for me as it gave me the opportunity to leave school and kickstart my career whilst learning with a hands-on approach. The favourite part of the apprenticeship so far has been meeting new people everyday whilst being on different sites. Currently, an average work day includes a lot of remedial and testing work in domestic properties, this is something I would like to continue doing once I have completed my apprenticeship. I am looking forward to using my voucher to buy a new hacksaw or cutting tool!” Well done Harvey and thank you for all of your hard work & dedication! Keep up the good work!

Foundation Friday | Alzheimers Society, Silly Sock Day!

04.05.21

Continuing with our Foundation Friday events, on the last Friday of April we encouraged our team to come into work in their craziest or most colourful; mismatched socks and donate to the Barlows Foundation. We used this Friday event to get talking about Alzheimers and hopefully raise more awareness of dementia. All the proceeds of this event will be used to support the Alzheimers Society. Dementia is a term that refers to a group of symptoms that involve memory loss as well as problems with thought, problem-solving, and language. These changes are mostly minor at first, but for those with dementia, they have progressed to the point that they are affecting everyday life. An individual with dementia can also experience mood or behaviour changes. Dementia develops when the brain is damaged by illnesses such as Alzheimer's disease or a series of strokes. The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer's disease, although it is not the only one. The exact signs that anyone with dementia has can vary depending on the affected areas of the brain and the condition that is causing the dementia. Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer. Someone develops it every three minutes and there’s currently no cure. Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading dementia charity. We campaign for change, fund research to find a cure and support people living with dementia today. Donations ensure that Alzheimer’s Society can be there for every person affected by dementia. Our amazing team managed to raise an impressive £154.10 on Friday! Taking our Foundation Friday total to £808.70!!

JD Wetherspoons | Festoon & Outside Lighting

20.04.21

At the beginning of March (2021), Wetherspoons wanted to install festoon and outside lighting to the seating and outside customer areas as a national project to ensure full use of the outside spaces once the lockdown restrictions are lifted. As of April 12th,  pubs and restaurants will be allowed to serve food and alcohol outdoors meaning for Wetherspoons, making the most out of the available outdoor space is critical. We got straight to work. Initially, we contacted every site manager to specify how the lights would be installed. We then surveyed each site and using the specification, provided quotes to supply and install the festoon and outside lighting. Because of the importance of the outdoor space we wanted to ensure the lighting was not only practical by providing sufficient light, but also aesthetically pleasing and enhanced the naturally relaxed atmosphere. With lockdown restrictions lifting on April 12th, this meant we had just four weeks to survey, quote and supply & install. We are please to have completed this project ahead of schedule and in time for these sites to once again be enjoyed by so many! Our team are excited for the hospitality industry to open once again we are looking forward to getting involved in many exciting projects in the near future. The pictures included here are from the Kingfisher in Stockport.

Foundation Friday | Epilepsy Society, Purple Friday

30.03.21

For our third Foundation Friday event of the year, we supported Epilepsy Society's Purple Day. Purple day is a time to get people talking about epilepsy, raise awareness of the condition and raise vital funds. Money raised by the team was donated to the Epilepsy Society. We managed to raise over £200 for this amazing cause! Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that affects the brain and nervous system. It is a common and dangerous condition. Seizures begin in the brain and can be triggered by a variety of factors, such as a person's anatomy, a structural change in the brain, or other underlying conditions. There are over 40 different forms of seizures, and not all of them are physical, making epilepsy a disorder that can go unnoticed. The Epilepsy Society is the leading provider of epilepsy services in the United Kingdom. Their dream is for anyone affected by epilepsy to live a full life. They want anyone with epilepsy to have the greatest shot of living a full life, free of seizures as much as possible. They work with everyone affected by epilepsy in the UK through cutting-edge research, awareness campaigns, information services, and expert treatment. Their epilepsy specialists and nursing homes not only offer advanced care for people with epilepsy on-site and across the UK, but they are also pioneering groundbreaking studies into the genetic causes of epilepsy. More information about epilepsy here.

Dave Prince Retires After 40years Service!

26.03.21

David Prince David Prince, one of our long-term Directors has retired after 40 years with Barlows. Dave has played a crucial role in the success of Barlows and has been with us through so many of our key milestones! Dave’s Story: Dave Joined T.C Barlow at the age of 17 in 1980 as an Apprentice after an interview in the living room of the Barlows family Home, which was also the office and workshop on the High Street in Malpas. After successfully completing his apprenticeship he worked as an electrician for several years with our founder Clifford Barlow, where Cliff passed on all his knowledge of electrics and how to run a business. Due to the growth of the business T.C Barlow would be renamed “Barlows Electrical Malpas”. Dave would go on to earn himself the position of Contracts Manager and would re-locate to a new office “Barlows Electrical Whitchurch” on Watergate Street in Whitchurch. From the new offices Dave built up the business and would manage his own team of electricians carrying out domestic and commercial works. During this time the company would buy second hand vans from the auctions. Dave recalls “after buying a second-hand van and de-fleeting it, removing the existing stickers ripped off the paint down to the metal, with the help of Sign of the Times, the red tick was created initially to cover the damage. From that day the Barlows Logo was born.” In 1998 Malpas and Whitchurch offices combined and moved to a new Head Quarters on Hampton Industrial Estate in Malpas bringing with it a new name of “Barlows UK Ltd” to reflect another huge growth period of the company. During this time Dave was made a Director due to his hard work, dedication and commitment to the company. The next ten years would be an extremely busy time for Dave as he would see the company grow even more taking on larger contracts and providing nationwide coverage. In 2008 work began on our very own purpose-built offices on the industrial estate at Malpas. Dave had a large input into the layout of the building and brought together his knowledge, so an office of the future could be be built. He continued to work as a Contract Manager managing national contracts. In 2012 he became Health and Safety Director. Stepping away from the day-to-day jobs to manage the Health and Safety at Barlows and ensure compliance. He was an integral part of the company gaining accreditations to ensure our high standards were maintained at all times. Dave has always been a keen motor cyclist, racing in his younger years and more recently taking part The Four Corners Charity Ride to raise money for a local charity. He enjoys walking and spending time on his canal boat. Everyone at Barlows would like to thank Dave for his hard work and commitment over the years and we all wish him a happy retirement with his wife Linda.
